Private School Statistics
- Private schools are found in every state except Wyoming.
- Half of all accredited schools are private colleges.
- The average public college saw a 7.8% increase in expenses in 2004-05 ($11,354), while costs to attend private colleges rose by an average of 5.6% (to $27,516).
- The amount of financial aid available is also rising. A full 76% of students at private colleges qualified for aid with a typical package totaling $11,600, of which around $7,000 was in grants that do not need to be repaid.
- The typical college graduate earns 75% more over their lifetime than someone with just a high school degree. This adds up to an average of $1 million more, which more than makes up for the burden of repaying student loans.
- Public schools receive about 41% of their funding from their state government. Private colleges must raise the funds through tuitions and fees; corporate and private gifts; alumni contributions; and endowments.
