School Search Tools

The US Department of Education provides two tools for searching for elementary, middle and secondary schools:

Private School Search. This tool lists 29,429 private schools and is based on the biennial PSS Private School Universe Survey.

Public School Search. This tool lists 86,792 public schools is based on the State Nonfiscal Survey of Public Elementary/Secondary Education section of the Common Core of Data (CCD) survey.

US News and World Report publishes an annual report listing America's Best High Schools. The high schools are ranked according to performance on state math and reading profiency tests (including the school's average and the school's scores for low-income and minority students) as well as performance on Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate tests (as a proxy for college-readiness).

Other free school search tools include the following, most of which are based on the US Department of Education databases supplemented with ratings, reviews and articles. Some provide more innovative search tools than the others, such as mapping capabilities.
